Customizer Seminar Spotlight 3by ~ Don WinarJuly 22nd 2005 2:00pm - 3:00pm Room: TBA Don Winar has been involved in scale modeling in one form or another since his early childhood. His early interests were mainly focused on models of human anatomy. Eventually Don's interests evolved into things military. After spending four years in the Marine Corps, Don was honorably discharged in September of 1969. He eventually became interested in military figures and armored vehicles. This interest developed in a great part due to Monogram Models' and Shep Paine's collaboration centered on Monograms' armored vehicle model kits. Over the years Don has received many awards for his dioramas, figure modeling and painting. He has also coauthored the well-received book on "How To Paint Realistic Military Figures” by Kalmbach Publishing Company. In the late nineties, with the introduction of Dragon's 1/6 scale figure line, Don became interested in the modeling potential those large scale figures represented. Most of Don's modeling times are now spent creating custom 1/6-scale figures for himself and that of other private collectors. As a result of the growth and the need to provide modelers interested in 1/6-scale figures with accessories to meet their needs’ Don along with partner and co-owner Rob Caswell founded Connecticut Valley Insignia (CVI). CVI manufactures 1/6 scale fabric military insignia, road signs and various resin accessories for the 1/6 scale figure modeler. Born in Hartford, CT, Don and his wife Karen live in South Windsor, CT. They have two grown daughters and two lovely grandchildren with a third on the way. In his seminar at DX'05 -- "Finishing 1/6th Figures" -- Don will take take you through the techniques needed to transform a posable action figure into a museum-quality static display model. Topics covered include detailing and weathering uniforms with paints and pastels, as well as creating scenic bases through making your own ground work. Don will demonstrate easy techniques that will give you professional results. Below are some samples of Don's incredible detail work -- you won't want to miss his tips and techniques for making stock 1/6th figures truly your own ... brought to you in furtherance of the hobby by Dragon Expo 2005!
